How To Use The Ritz-Carlton $100 Airfare Discount

I’ve written extensively about The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card, which was recently relaunched with a very generous sign-up bonus:

  • Three complimentary nights at any Tier 1-4 Ritz-Carlton hotel after spending $ 5,000 within three months
  • 10,000 bonus points after adding an authorized user and having them make a purchase within the first three months

I’ve written about some of the benefits of the card, including the $ 300 annual airline credit, Ritz-Carlton Gold status (which is also valuable at Marriott properties), the $ 100 domestic companion airfare benefit, etc.

Well, Ford was recently approved for The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card, so I’ve been playing around with the benefits of the card a bit more. One of the benefits I wanted to look further into was the $ 100 domestic companion airfare benefit, so that’s what this post is about.

What’s the $ 100 Ritz-Carlton companion airfare benefit?

For having The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card you receive a $ 100 discount when you book two people on a single itinerary. This benefit is provided on select Visa Infinite cards, so they’re responsible for fulfilling the benefit. Here are the basic terms of using this benefit:

  • Only valid for roundtrip travel, meaning itineraries that are one way, open jaw, etc., don’t qualify
  • Bookings need to be made within one day and 11 months of departure
  • The ticket must be booked in the name of the primary cardholder
  • Travel needs to be booked through the Visa Infinite travel portal to qualify, and most airlines participate, with the exception of some low cost carriers like Allegiant, Frontier, Southwest, and Spirit
  • As a general rule of thumb, fares should be the same that are otherwise publicly available, though you’ll always want to double check just to be sure
  • The booking should be treated similarly to any other online travel agency booking, meaning you’ll still earn miles/points, have the same upgrade eligibility as otherwise, etc.
  • The $ 100 discount is per itinerary, not per person (meaning you save a total of $ 100 for two people traveling together)

How do you book with the Visa Infinite companion airfare benefit?

To use this benefit you’ll want to visit this special site, which is where you can search airfare and book tickets. On the homepage you’ll be prompted to enter your first and last name, and also your eligible credit card number.

The site is very easy to use, and the entire booking process could be completed within a few minutes. Once logged in you’ll be on the “Flight Search” page, where you’ll be prompted to enter your origin, destination, and travel dates.

The next page will display all the fare options across most major airlines. I searched availability between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and it returned options on American, Delta, United, and Virgin America. You can select your outbound flight from the list of options, and once you’ve selected that, you can choose your return flight.

The next page will display a fare summary for both passengers. As you can see, in this case the total for both passengers is $ 232.40. The $ 100 discount is immediately reflected, making the total for both passengers $ 132.40, or just $ 66.20 per person. That’s incredible.

The next page will let you enter the booking details. The primary cardmember needs to be one of the travelers, so their name will already be pre-populated into the first field. Then you can enter the name of the second traveler, who can be anyone.

The cool thing is that you can also enter your frequent flyer information, so once you book your reservations will immediately show in the itineraries section of your corresponding frequent flyer account. You can also add your Known Traveler Number, to be sure you get TSA Pre-Check.

You have to pay for your reservation using The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card, as that card information is already pre-populated on the booking page. On the plus side, the card does offer double points on travel purchases.

You can even use this benefit for mixed carrier itineraries. For example, take the below trip between Seattle and Los Angeles, flying American on the outbound and United for the return. The total cost for two passengers is $ 92.40, or just $ 46.20 per passenger!

Bottom line

I see us using this $ 100 companion discount on the The Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card a lot. This was my first time playing around with the website, and it sure is easy to use. Many domestic fares are already pretty cheap nowadays, though this will help lower them even more.

Have you used this Visa Infinite benefit yet, and if so, what was your experience like?
